Instructional Course Design Coaching
The approach favoured by CompetencED is one that empowers educators to feel confident to eventually do the work on their own. We thrive on making sure we meet the client where they are on the design of their course. They might be at a beginning level wanting to learn everything there is to know about course design, intermediate level wanting to deepen their understanding of the theoretical knowledge or an expert wanting to brainstorm on how to make slight modification to make their course more engaging and current.

Here is a concrete example of the type of work we do with educators:
01
Establish the needs
We met with this professional who is an expert in their field and was taking on a position in a post-secondary institution to teach their speciality. During our first meeting, we established their level of knowledge about education and stated clear goals for our time together.
02
The plan
We started working right away on our goals by sharing both theoretical AND practical knowledge. At CompetencED, we make sure that educators feel empowered to lead on their own afterwards. By knowing the reason WHY we do certain things, educators are easily able to transfer their knowledge. We ensure that the course is not only pedagogically sound but also accessible and interactive for students and sustainable for educators.

Some ideas discussed included: appropriate teaching strategies, technology and multimedia integration, guidance on course layout, assessment methods, and student engagement techniques.
03
Retroactive feedback
We remained available for quick check-ins throughout the semester to make sure new questions were being answered as they emerged (sometimes we don't know what we don't know!) and that instructing was running as smooth as possible.
04
Continuing Coaching 1:1
We met again with the educator to establish new goals after a full year of teaching. We were then able to work on more advanced goals.
